Susan M. Kalp
Profile
Ms. Kalp began her legal career as a law clerk to the Honorable Katherine R. Dupuis, J.S.C. in Somerset / Union Counties from 1994 to 1995, after which she spent several years in public service. She first served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Trial Division of the Special Victims Unit in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, where she specialized in prosecuting sex offenders, and in undercover child pornography and exploitation investigations. She also supervised the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
Thereafter, Ms. Kalp joined the Legal Division of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in Alexandria, Virginia. There, she authored and revised legislation that was either pending or planned to be introduced to Congress and various state legislatures regarding numerous child protection issues such as sex offender flags, civil commitment and internet notification for sex offenders. Ms. Kalp also routinely advised federal and state law enforcement and prosecutors nationwide on issues such as electronic surveillance, search & seizure protocol, and privacy statutes, and created material for the Center’s Training Division. She assisted in providing content for the Center’s “Netsmartz” website, dedicated to child safety on the internet, and she oversaw compliance issues for the Exploited Child Unit. Ms. Kalp also assisted in drafting the FCC regulations and law enforcement manuals for the nationwide “AMBER” Alert Program.
Ms. Kalp joined Ogletree Deakins in 2007 after spending six years in a Philadelphia litigation firm. There Ms. Kalp defended large products liability, construction accident, and motor vehicle matters, including many fatalities, as well as premises liability cases. In that regard, she specialized in cases involving underlying criminal offenses such as assaults on interior and exterior client property, false arrest/unlawful restraint in connection with retail theft, and claims for excessive force against security companies. She also sat as an arbitrator in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and was actively involved in the Philadelphia community through her work as a child advocate, rape crisis counselor, and volunteer at the Special Olympics and Ronald McDonald house.
Experience
Ms. Kalp represents employers both at the agency level, and in state and federal court, related to litigation alleging sexual harassment, disability, race, age, national origin and sex discrimination, as well as whistleblower claims and issues under the FMLA, state leave statutes, and wage and hour laws. Ms. Kalp’s clients include national corporations as well as small businesses and non-profit organizations. In addition to her litigation practice, Ms. Kalp advises clients regarding employee discipline and termination, and frequently consults on pornography issues that arise in the workplace.
