Ms. Roane provides counseling and litigation services to management clients in employment matters. She represents employers in employment discrimination, retaliation, harassment, FMLA, wrongful discharge, and wage and hour cases. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Roane was an associate attorney with Haynsworth, Baldwin, Johnson & Greaves, LLC in Raleigh, North Carolina and served as a law clerk for the Honorable P. Trevor Sharp in the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.
Experience
Ms. Roane handles the following types of matters:
- Litigates all aspects of employment law cases in state and federal courts and before administrative agencies
- Drafts employment contracts, covenants not to compete, severance agreements, and settlement agreements
- Prepares and reviews all types of personnel policies and employee handbooks
- Counsels clients on a wide range of employment issues, including difficult disciplinary and termination situations, reductions in force, and matters under Title VII, the ADEA, the OWBPA, the ADA, the FMLA, the FLSA, the North Carolina Retaliatory Employment Discrimination Act (“REDA”), the North Carolina Wage and Hour Act, and state wrongful discharge law
- Presents seminars for clients and employer organizations on a wide range of employment-related topics
Her experience includes:
- Obtained summary judgment on behalf of a major automotive electronics manufacturer in a closely contested Title VII sex discrimination case, overcoming evidence offered by the plaintiff that similarly situated males were not terminated
- Successfully appealed to the North Carolina Court of Appeals a superior court judge’s decision striking a large construction company’s Workers’ Compensation lien, and obtained a new decision awarding the company a large percentage of its lien
- Won a motion for summary judgment in an arbitration involving allegations of national origin, age and race discrimination in favor of a major consumer credit and financial company, and obtained an award of $34,000 in attorneys’ fees and costs
- Prevailed on a motion for a directed verdict in an arbitration involving allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation in favor of a nationwide copying and shipping services company
- Obtained an arbitration award in favor of a multi-state metal components manufacturer in a case involving allegations of age discrimination.
